Before You Buy Infant Bedding: Preparing Your Baby’s Room

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Everyone knows that the crib is the most important thing in the nursery, but it is the baby bedding that makes the crib look amazing. Online stores often offer a much wider range of choices, so if you’re looking for a particular type of crib, hit Google and see what you can find. Keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and not everyone will agree with your choice of bedding. But when you find the right one, be prepared. Bedding is expensive and even a “cheap” set can cost over a hundred dollars. The easiest way to narrow your search is to choose a theme and set a budget before you start shopping.

Think about how large a family you’re planning to have. Will you be having more? If yes, then take that into consideration. For example, a baby girl will probably mean that you want girl crib bedding, lacey and frilly, or at least pink and feminine, like a Pixie Stix 4 piece crib set. Sounds great - but what if your next baby is a boy? Try explaining to people why he has a pink and frilly bedding set. Considering how much you’ll be spending on a crib set, unless you have a big budget, it’s much smarter to pick a gender neutral bedding set that you can use again and again. Budgets are important, so make one and stick to it. It’s tempting to buy a more expensive set because it looks cuter, but is it really work the cost? An infant has no concept of money (or style!) so there’s no reason to spend $800 on a bedding set that she’s just going to spit up on anyway.

Baby stores, even the large ones like Babies R Us, usually can’t offer the range of choices that an online-only store can, particularly when the ecommerce site is strictly focused on selling baby bedding. Department stores often carry only one or two brands of bedding, while online retailers may have upwards of 20 different brands on their sites. And you’re not paying more when you shop online, either. Online retailers can almost always sell for less than a physical location can (lower overhead).

The offline store does have one big advantage over the online one, though - you can thoroughly examine and feel the bedding before you buy it. So when an online retailer tells you that a bedding set is cuddly, you have no way to verify it. No matter how good a photograph is, it can never replace the real thing. You might want to look online for baby bedding ideas, but you should be aware that the range of choices is staggering and you may get overwhelmed by too many options. Try to have a general idea of what you want and how much you want to spend before you start looking.

Decorating a Room For The First Time

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Enjoy your home improvement projects, there is certainly no need for tesrs

You want To decorate a room and you have never tackled anything this big in the past. Here are some helpful suggestions first. I’m sure you know many people who will offer suggestions as you proceed.

Lighter colour schemes will enhance the space in smaller rooms. If it is a bigger room, then you can put [bright or deep without making it feel hemmed in. Likewise, if the room does not get too much light, then, the place can be brightened by using lighter coloures with an eggshell finish. Try not to use white, though, it tend to look cold and clinical - and it very quickly becomes grubby. Another reason to use eggshell paint is that it does accept the occasional wipe down. an important consideration when you have youn children.

Having searched though all those colour charts, and made your colour choice, now you must decide if you are going to employ a contractor to do the work or do it yourself. Painting the walls is an easier route if you are doing it yourself. Wallpaper is generally more expensive that paint so if you find you hate the finished product it is less of a disaster.

The key to a good finish is preparation-preparation-preparation. Before you start, empty your room of as much furniture as you can. Cover the rest with at least two layers of cloth. Make sure you adequately protect any floors and carpets. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned so that you remove the accumulated grease and grime. Next fill any small holes or cracks in wall with filler, several layers may be required for larger holes. The filler will usually shrink as it dries. When the plaster is thoroughly dry (at least 24 hours,) rub it down thoroughly with sandpaper  so it is very smooth. Next, smooth all the woodwork with sandpaper. Getting down to the bare wood is the best option, but this is not always possible so make sure your woodwork is smooth.

It is generally better to work from the top down. Paint the ceiling first. Wait until it fully dry before starting on anything else. Next place masking tape at the very edge of the ceiling so that you get a very straight line when you paint the walls. Do not leave the masking tape on for to long, it will be difficult to get off without damaging your newly painted ceiling.

Using rollers rather than brushes for the large areas will usually give a more uniform finish. To get good coverage and depth in the finish, you may need to use several coats when using a roller, even so you will still use less paint than if you use a paintbrush, it will dry faster, go on much faster and therefore, even though you are applying more than one coat it will still be faster.

Now for the woodwork. Again, the walls should be masked where they meet the woodwork. Then apply an undercoat using a small paintbrush. The undercoat will help the top coat to adhere better and will therefore last longer. It also gives a much smoother final finish if the undercoat is lightly sanded. Woodwork is usually painted with gloss paint. This is easier to keep clean and takes the considerable amount of touching that woodwork gets. Do not try to put too thick a layer on at one time. It will run, and look horrible. Far better to apply two thin coats. Be sure your first coat of paint is properly dry before applying a second coat.

If for any reason you have to stop painting for a while, wrap your paintbrushes tightly in clingfilm. .It prevents air getting to them and will stop them drying out. Even after you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, it is still useful to wrap your brushes. There are always occasions when you need to make good you decorations after disasters, so always keep any left over paint

Always paint window frames when the windows are slightly open. Paint will securely glue the windows permanently shut!  This also applies to doors. When painting doors, the rule is that you paint those parts of the frame that can be seen when it is open. Or in the case of an inward opening door, when it is closed.

And finally. Take your time. Take enjoyment from the pleasure of watching the transformation of your room. Home improvement should be enjoyable. If you find you have hated every minute of it, then next time you want a rooom painted, save up to pay somebody else to do it for you. If you don’t enjoy the process, then you will tend to rush and skimp the work and the end result will not be so good.

Making A Greek Armor Collage for your Home

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

It wasn’t too long ago I had someone want a whole set of Greek armor (helmets, weapons, etc..) for a big collage in a brand new restaurant he was opening up. So, what items did he use and what can you use to increase the authentic atmosphere and environment of your Greek restaurant? Here are some tips that you may want to consider.

If you are making a 3D collage, there are a couple of ways you can go about it. Probably the easiest way is to take two Greek spears and have them crossing on the wall. They will be relatively inexpensive compared to armor and they will take up most of the wall, catching people’s eyes. You can then add a Greek helmet to the top of the collage to add a little extra spice to the display. Here is another way to add much to your Greek display: have one or two swords hanging or crossing in your collage. Thought these are going to be much smaller than spears, it will get the main idea into the heads of your guests or customers.

If you really want to go all out and have a full display of armor and weapons, then this is what you’ll need to do. The first thing you should is that most Greek armor cuirasses you can buy today by default do not hang on the wall, so some customization might be required. The Royal Greek Muscle Cuirass is perfect for this. This type of armor is made by the world renowned company Deepeeka, and it is carried in many brick and mortar stores as well as online. This armor set also comes with a Royal belt, which you can hang from the armor. The next thing you’ll want to do is make sure you construct a sturdy stand for a Greek helmet that you will be purchasing in one of the online stores. However, if you wish to match your armor, you’ll need to get the Royal Corinthian Helmet. Add a Greek shield (any one will do, but the Trojan war shield will look best), and a sword or a couple of spears hanging behind the armor and you’ll have a good looking 3D collage.
