Before You Buy Infant Bedding: Preparing Your Baby’s Room
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Everyone knows that the crib is the most important thing in the nursery, but it is the baby bedding that makes the crib look amazing. Online stores often offer a much wider range of choices, so if you’re looking for a particular type of crib, hit Google and see what you can find. Keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and not everyone will agree with your choice of bedding. But when you find the right one, be prepared. Bedding is expensive and even a “cheap” set can cost over a hundred dollars. The easiest way to narrow your search is to choose a theme and set a budget before you start shopping.
Think about how large a family you’re planning to have. Will you be having more? If yes, then take that into consideration. For example, a baby girl will probably mean that you want girl crib bedding, lacey and frilly, or at least pink and feminine, like a Pixie Stix 4 piece crib set. Sounds great - but what if your next baby is a boy? Try explaining to people why he has a pink and frilly bedding set. Considering how much you’ll be spending on a crib set, unless you have a big budget, it’s much smarter to pick a gender neutral bedding set that you can use again and again. Budgets are important, so make one and stick to it. It’s tempting to buy a more expensive set because it looks cuter, but is it really work the cost? An infant has no concept of money (or style!) so there’s no reason to spend $800 on a bedding set that she’s just going to spit up on anyway.
Baby stores, even the large ones like Babies R Us, usually can’t offer the range of choices that an online-only store can, particularly when the ecommerce site is strictly focused on selling baby bedding. Department stores often carry only one or two brands of bedding, while online retailers may have upwards of 20 different brands on their sites. And you’re not paying more when you shop online, either. Online retailers can almost always sell for less than a physical location can (lower overhead).
The offline store does have one big advantage over the online one, though - you can thoroughly examine and feel the bedding before you buy it. So when an online retailer tells you that a bedding set is cuddly, you have no way to verify it. No matter how good a photograph is, it can never replace the real thing. You might want to look online for baby bedding ideas, but you should be aware that the range of choices is staggering and you may get overwhelmed by too many options. Try to have a general idea of what you want and how much you want to spend before you start looking.
